Legislative Session 2010 Is Underway!

Let us know how this web site can best serve you!  Contact us at ASCIN@ASCIN.org .

Our Alabama state legislators --- 35 State Senators and 105 State Representatives --- are meeting now in the 2010 Regular legislative session.  Budgets will be determined, laws will be made, and the business of education is always at the forefront.

With the added impact of a struggling economy, and with proration being declared on our education budget, it is more important than ever to stay informed about what our lawmakers are doing in Montgomery.  Not only during the legislative session, but year-round.

You will find links to other sources of information under Quick Links.  Wherever possible, links will be provided to existing sources of information.  Occasionally, tables will be created to simplify difficult information.

Regarding the Session....

Alabama State Legislature - Official website

The Alabama Legislative Session began on January 12, 2010 and must conclude by April 26, 2010.

The legislature will meet for 30 legislative days, typically Tuesdays and Thursdays, within a 105-calendar-day period.

End of Day Reports are available on ALISON.  Look on the left-hand menu bar.  Click on End of Day Reports, then on "Current Status Report". These are helpful if you want to catch up on where a bill stands in the legislative process.

How to Use This Site

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the organization of this site.  To the left, you will first find links to help you find your legislator and to learn which state representatives and senators serve on which committees as they relate to educational issues.  The link, "Contacting Your Legislator" will give helpful tips as to how to share your opinion with your legislator.  By no means is this an exhaustive list, rather, a beginning.

Under "Legislative Issues", again to the left, you will find links to pages that will list legislation that is being proposed and a brief description of that legislation.  Bills are either identified as House Bills, HB, or Senate Bills, SB.  Often, similar bills are presented in both the Senate and House with very little difference in language.

The links at the top of the page are more general in nature and hope to provide with you with more information to keep you informed.  The tab "Current Legislation" is a great way to keep updated on all bills related to our Alabama School Community.

The ASCIN will conduct surveys periodically to determine support of pieces of legislation.  These can be found under the "Surveys" link to the left.  Please check back often to participate in our surveys.  All survey responses are anonymous unless you choose to provide contact information.

We will also post links to newspaper articles related to education legislation through links to articles on al.com.  Scroll to the bottom of this page to view these articles.  If you have links to share, please send them to ASCIN@ASCIN.org.

Please let us know if you believe we have omitted a piece of legislation or have provided incorrect information by writing to us at ASCIN@ASCIN.org.

So What Do I Do If I Have an Opinion on Proposed Legislation?

We are so glad you asked.  The purpose of the ASCIN is to provide you with information, allow you to form an opinion, and then advocate for you sharing your opinion with your legislator.  The ASCIN holds no advocacy positions on any legislation.  We simply want to keep our school community informed about legislation that may become law.

There are many ways to express your opinion.  The link to the left, "Contacting Your Legislator", will take you to the ASCIN page outlining various ways to contact your legislator and suggested language to use in letter-writing.  By no means will the list be exhaustive, rather we hope it will help start you on the path to advocacy.
